INSPIRED AND AWAKENED – Reflections from the PCI Breakfast Session

Today, 17th June 2025, Pension Club International (PCI) held its monthly breakfast, which was nothing short of transformative. What began as a warm gathering turned into a profound journey through youth, aging, financial preparedness, mental health, purpose, and the bold responsibility we each hold for the life we live, now and into retirement.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Julius Kipngetich delivered the keynote address,

which was a powerful mix of wisdom and challenge.

“You are the CEO of your own life. So, who’s on your board? Who are your advisors? Who is holding you accountable to your life vision?”- Said Dr. Kipngetich

Jeff Odundo, the Chairman of the Club, used the metaphor of life stages from birth to retirement and reminded us that too many people fall into depression or lose direction once they leave formal employment. Retirement is not a withdrawal; it’s a new season that must be actively designed, he concluded.

Dr. Hosea Kili, the CPF Group Managing Director, who is the dream holder and a Director of PCI shared briefly about what inspired him to start the Club. He gave his own observation based on experience of the challenges retirees face and concluded that we must prepare, not just financially, but socially, emotionally, and mentally.

“When people leave employment, they get lost. They have no one to talk to, no structure, and that leads to emotional, mental, and financial decline.”

Dr. Kipng’etich encouraged club members to develop their personal vision, set retirement income goals early, and avoid last-minute panic at 60. He talked on the importance of liquidity of assets, strategic savings, and creating a reliable income stream. The breakfast session laid a foundation for practical, purposeful aging. He encouraged us to move from being passive savers to active architects of our future, urging:

“Don’t say you don’t have money. Say you haven’t allocated it. Even black tax should have a red line.”

He encouraged investors to rethink investment culture, especially within pension funds:

“We can’t just keep dumping our money in treasury bonds. Let’s think bigger including investing in roads, factories, and national infrastructure that creates jobs. Let our savings develop our country.”

The team from Jubilee Insurance gave a talk on health insurance coverage (starting before retirement and continuing throughout life).  We also reflected on mental wellness, especially for men who often suffer in silence:

“Men tend to sit quietly in rooms like this. They don’t talk and then they break.”The PCI Breakfast gave space to talk, share, and heal-because connectedness is the antidote to isolation.

Another theme that resonated deeply was legacy. What do we want our grandchildren to say about us at 90? How do we structure our lives so that when we are gone, people can say, “Yes, this person made a difference”?.  PCI continues to serve as a movement, not just a club of transformation. We’re not just planning for retirement. We are reimagining life after work with dignity, clarity, and purpose.

To everyone who joined us, thank you. For those who missed it, follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn @Pension Club International. We are just getting started. Let’s age intentionally. Let’s live with legacy.
